New York. - After traveling over 4000 miles and having 3 matches in an 8 day stretch the New York City Football Club couldn't overcome lethargy as they were shut down 2-0 in the rematch of the Eastern Conference final last season against a rested Philadelphia Union. On a day where the weather couldn't have been better for a late winter day the team struggled mightily out of the gate, giving up goals in the 12th & 33rd minute and nearly a 3rd at the end of the first half that was quickly overturned due to offsides. Despite maintaining possession of the ball for nearly 75% of the match as well as a far better pass percentage they were unable to up much pressure thanks to a smothering Union defense that only allowed 3 shots on goal, however things could have been much different. In the 27th minute a rare overturned red card on defender Jack Elliot during a bona fide NYCFC scoring chance was overturned via VAR when Santi Rodriguez was called for a handball; turning the Union from being a man day for two thirds of the match into an innocent free kick from their own end.

In the post game but head coach Ronny Deila and captain Sean Johnson refused to make excuses, but did attribute that the schedule with the CONCACAF Champions League was complicating their schedule. However both acknowledged that the upcoming long break will be great for the team to rest, recoup and study as their next match of any kind won't be until April 2nd in Toronto as both teams will aim for their second win of the season.

5 Notes:

1) NYCFC needs the upcoming break, having played 5 matches in a 15 day stretch. Many feel that CONCACAF has had an impact on the team's slow start as the Gents in Blue have been shut out in 3 of their first four matches this season with 4 goals last week in the home opener against Montreal the only times they've gotten shots into the net.

2) With the win the Philadelphia Union raise their record to an MLS best 3-0-1 and remain one of only 3 teams left in the East without a loss this season.

3) Taty Castellanos so far in the MLS season is still without a goal or an assist to start the season, however in CCL he's faired much better in four matches having 4 goals and 2 assists.

4) Speaking of CCL, the team has reached the semifinals for the first time in team history. Their first match against the Seattle Sounders will be at Lumen Field in Washington on April 6th, followed by the second leg a week later on the 13th at Red Bull Arena. It isn't Yankee Stadium, but bit by bit their home matches are at least getting closer to home. Citi Field will be the team's second home this season however is not CONCACAF approved. The team will get their first taste of a “home” match at Citi Field on April 24th.
