Maintenance Technician

Job Requirements

A valid forklift licence

Ability to read Blueprints

Knowledge of crane operation

Job Profile / Duties / Responsibilities:

The Toronto South Detention Centre is looking to hire 5 on-call Cleaners to provide cleaning services for the administrative and secure inmate occupied areas of the facility.

These positions are irregularly scheduled on-call positions and work 0 to 40 hours per week, including weekends and statutory holidays, with no minimum guaranteed number of hours per week.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Perform physical cleaning services in all areas of the institution such as operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment

Use platform lifts as well as lift and move office equipment and furniture to allow for cleaning

Lift and dispose garbage and refuse

Maintain premises by cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, dusting offices, corridors, washing woodwork and tiles, walls and ceilings, removing graffiti, cleaning inside windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies

Perform general services such as unloading supplies from trucks, locking doors, switching off utilities, and reporting defective equipment

Maintain records and security of cleaning supplies used, and requesting supervisor to requisition replacement supplies as needed

Supervise and instruct inmate helpers on cleaning tasks

Job Requirements

Cleaning Knowledge and Experience

You have demonstrated knowledge of and experience in cleaning methods, processes, and materials within an institutional, commercial, or business setting

You have experience in the safe and proper use of industrial cleaning equipment such as floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, and other tools

You have experience with waste management and recycling practices

You have knowledge of health and safety (including WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety Act) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning

You have demonstrated ability to understand and follow work policies and protocols in order to acquire knowledge of and comply with institutional security protocols and procedures

You have basic understanding of LEED building standards as it applies to cleaning practices (for more information on the LEED building standards, please visit the Canada Green Building Council website at www.cagbc.org)

Other Essential Skills

You have problem-solving skills in order to determine appropriate method and materials to use for various cleaning tasks
