Toronto. – Another year comes to a close in professional tennis as the four major tournaments
concluded in Flushing Meadows with the surprising results at the US Open.

Here is a recap of what was a spectacular year of tennis:

Women’s - As the new year kicked off, so did the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Serena Williams lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open to Karolina Pliskova, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7, once
again putting her hopes of winning her 24th Grand Slam title, after having her daughter, aside.

Naomi Osaka made the finals once more after defeating Serena Williams in the US Open in 2018, which
earned her first-ever Grand Slam title.

At just 21 years of age, Osaka faced Petra Kvitová, whom she beat in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, and won
her second Grand Slam of her career.

Men’s - The men’s finals were one we’ve seen many times before. Rafael Nadal went up against the
world number one, Novak Djokovic, but he, unfortunately, fell short in the end.

The match ended rather quickly in three sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic displayed his undeniable talent on
the court and defeated his equally talented opponent.

Women’s - Ashleigh Barty of Australia beat the 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova in two short sets, 6-1,
6-3 and won her first-ever grand slam title.

The defending champion, Simona Halep, lost to Amanda Anisimova, who was just 17 years old at the
time.

Serena Williams fought hard to stay in the tournament but ultimately lost in the third round to Sofia
Kenin in two sets, 2-6, 5-7.

Men’s - Rafael Nadal redeemed himself from the Australian Open final’s loss on his favorite surface, at a
tournament that he has dominated for over a decade.

He beat his opponent Dominic Thiem in four sets, 6–3, 5–7, 6–1, 6–1. With this defeat, it makes in
Nadal’s 12th time winning the French Open, showing once again why the Spaniard is a tennis superstar.

Women’s - Serena Williams once more was on a quest to win her 24th Grand Slam Title, but to her
disappointment, she was not able to do it at Wimbledon either.
Serena and Simona Halep faced each other in the finals where the Romanian beat Serena in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-2, crushing her dreams of winning another Grand Slam.

Men’s - The men’s finals were nothing short of extraordinary, with the world's most talented tennis
players fighting tooth and nail to win this prestigious title. Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, tennis
worlds superstars, faced each other in the 2019 Wimbledon finals, where Djokovic just barely defeated
Federer in 5 sets, 3 of which went to a tie break, 7–6, 1–6, 7–6, 4–6, 13–12. In the end, Djokovic took the
win and earned his 16th Grand Slam.

Women’s - We got a taste of the US Open women’s final a few weeks before the beginning of the
tournament at the Rogers Cup. Bianca Andreescu faced Serena Williams, where she ultimately won after
Serena retired the match early due to an injury.

This time, however, the match came to an end, and Bianca got the chance to show her athleticism by
beating the champion in two sets, 6-3, 7-5. She made history in many ways, but most importantly she
won a Grand Slam title, which no Canadian has done before.

Men’s - Many expected the US Open Men’s final to resemble Wimbledon finals with Roger Federer and
Novak Djokovic facing off against each other. That did not happen as Djokovic was forced to retire his
match against Stan Wawrinka due to an injury, and Roger Federer lost in the Quarter-finals to Grigor
Dimitrov in five sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.

Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev met again in the men’s finals, only weeks after Nadal beat Medvedev
at the Rogers Cup finals. Only this time, unlike at the Rogers Cup, the young Russian came out to fight till
the end. The match went to 5 sets, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 4-6, and the outcome was that the world champion
became victorious again. Rafa won his 19th Grand Slam Title.
